Lantern Mini Cards

I am so happy that Emily Leiphart hosts this Chinese New Year Blog Hop together with some of the stamp brands! It is very rare that the biggest craft community in the Western know about the Chinese New Year! I am so touched when I know about this Chinese New Year Blog Hop. 

I decided to play along with this Chinese New Year Blog Hop mainly because I am celebrating Chinese New Year! Secondly, I get to win some prizes (if I am lucky and hopefully the Year of Snake is kind to me)!

Most of the sponsors offer free digital images that you can use to enter the blog hop challenge. When I saw cherry blossoms and lanterns digital image from Fresh Squeezed Stamps, I just could not think that this image is good for Mid-Autumn Festival (also know as Mooncake Festival) as well! Thus, I decided to make two (2) 3x3 mini cards from this image with one themed Chinese New Year and another one themed Mid-Autumn Festival.

Chinese New Year Theme (CNY#001)

Here is the mini card themed Chinese New Year. The lanterns are colored in red as usually the lanterns for Chinese New Year are red. Some gold lining is added to the lanterns to give some shimmering look as well to imitate the light from within the lanterns. Gold is mostly used during Chinese New Year to symbolize fortune. Usually during Chinese New Year, the cherry or plum blossoms are used to symbolize luckiness. Thus, I add some look alike cherry or plum blossoms to the branches.

Mid-Autumn Festival Theme (MAF#001)

Here is the second mini card themed Mid-Autumn Festival. The lanterns are colored in different colors as the lanterns during Mid-Autumn Festival are colorful. Some yellow shading is added to the surrounding side of the lanterns to imitate the light from within the lanterns. As Mid-Autumn Festival is usually after harvest season, some of yellow gems are added to the branches since there would not be any flowers blooming. I made a similar Mid-Autumn Festival mini card back in 2010 using stamping. Well with this digital image from Fresh Squeezed Stamps, this year Mid-Autumn Festival cards are a lot more easier to mass produce!

Finally, I able to squeeze in some times to make my second Chinese New Year card for 2013! I think the next card would be mass production since I really have very little time now. Chinese New Year is just a week away! Aaaaarrggghhhh.....

AnnaBelle Stamps Blog Challenge - Sketch AC155

Back to the card. For this card, I adopt the sketch from AnnaBelle Stamps Blog Challenge - Sketch AC155 sketch/challenge as shown above. It is a simple sketch since I have limited time.

Close-up : The gold snake

The snake is stamped on a white card stock and colored using Copic markers. It is layered onto a gold corrugated card stock.

Close-up : The sentiment in red scallop circle

The sentiment is stamped on a red scallop circle and attached between the white card stock and gold corrugated card stock as in the sketch.

Close-up : The white brads

Three (3) white brads (which has been on my stash for quite some times) are used on the right bottom corner of the gold corrugated card stock as shown in the sketch. Later, the whole gold corrugated card stock is adhered onto a red card base.

Happy Snake Year! #2 - Inside

On the inside of the card, as the red is too dark for writing, a pink inlay is used. Then, funny sentiment is stamped in the middle of the inlay.

Finally made my first Chinese New Year card for 2013! I know it is quite late to start but my available time is limited due to my day job.

Sunday Stamps Challenge SSC32

The simple sketch from Sunday Stamps Challenge SSC32 as shown above is adopted for this card. This card also influenced by CAS-ual Fridays CFC86 - Long and Short challenge whereby it requires us to create a CAS card that has one long side and one short side.

Close-up : The gold snake

The snake is stamped on a long white card stock and colored using Copic markers. It is layered onto a long gold card stock.

Close-up : The sentiment

The sentiment is stamped at the bottom of the long white card stock, below the snake which is just perfect! The long white card stock is then adhered onto a red card base.

Close-up : Fishtail banners/flags

Some fishtail banners/flags are trimmed from left over card stocks and pattern papers. Those left over card stocks and pattern papers really great used for creating small fishtail banners/flags. They are attached onto the top of the card base as shown in sketch.

Happy Snake Year - Inside

On the inside of the card, as the red is too dark for writing, a golden yellow inlay is used. Then, funny sentiment is stamped in the middle of the inlay.

Rabbit Chinese New Year Card

Made this Chinese New Year card in last minute for a best friend. It is a simple card and no embellishments used.

Card Positioning System (CPS) Card Sketches CPS 202

This card layout is inspirational from Card Positioning System (CPS) Card Sketches CPS 202 sketch/challenge as shown.

As the custom color for Chinese New Year is red, this card is no exceptional. This year Chinese New Year is the Year of the Rabbit. Thus, rabbit is used in this card.

The rabbit from Studio G Series 29 VC0008 is stamped on a red cardstock and trimmed circle. Then the edge fof the circle is distressed with some gold ink.

Close-up : Message "Gong Xi" on the left circle

The message on the left circle is "Gong Xi" and the message on the right circle is "Fa Chai". It is a message, "Gong Xi Fa Chai" which is a greeting use during Chinese New Year between people to greet and congratulate each other. It is loosely translates to "congratulations and be prosperous". The messages are printed using printer onto cardstock. These circles has been distressed with some gold ink as well.

The circles are attached onto a gold shimmering cardstock and later onto a red shimmering cardstock. Finally, it is attached onto a red card.

Chinese New Year & Valentine's Day 2010 (Sample)

This year both Chinese New Year and Valentine's Day fall on the same day - 14 February 2010. Thus, two-in-one themed greeting card is produced.

Gold based with shimmering card is used and shaped into rectangular shape for these two-in-one themed greeting card.

The front of the card is themed with Chinese New Year and a firecracker image is used as representation of Chinese New Year. The image is being shaped using pink paper trim into about approximately 0.5cm x 1.5cm. These small papers are then arrange into diagonally right down and left down to make the image of firecracker. Before the small papers placement, a black marker is used to draw a line as the string that hold the firecracker together.

A message of "Happy Chinese New Year 2010" is written below the firecracker image using the same black marker.

The back of the card is themed for Valentine's Day and a heart shape of various colors are placed at the right upper of the card. A message ".....and Happy Valentine's Day" is written using the same black marker at the left upper of the card.

"Best Wishes" and signature sign off is signed at the right bottom of the gold card using the same black marker.

Chinese New Year 2009 Card (Sample)

This year Chinese New Year is the Year of the Cow. Thus, a cow themed greeting card is produced.

Red based card is using to shape into rectangular shape.

Chinese New Year 2009 card - Front

At the front of the card, the four (4) corners of the card are decorated with gold cows that punch using a cow shaped puncher. Gold color is used as it represent fortune and using it on the cow, it can be called "Gold Cow" or "金牛" in Chinese. In a middle of the card, a message "Happy Chinese New Year 2009" is printed on a yellow based paper and shaped into square before decorate with a decorative scissor at the four (4) corners.

Chinese New Year 2009 card - Back

At the back of the card, message "Gong Xi Fa Chai" and "May the year of the [cow] bring you success, happiness and prosperity" is again printed on the yellow based paper. It is then shaped into rectangular and decorate with a decorative scissor at the four (4) corners. This yellow message is then placed diagonally onto the red card. A pop-up gold punched cow is decorated between the message ".....of the" and ".....bring....." to give some texture of the whole card.

"Best Wishes" and signature sign off is signed at the right bottom of the red card using a silver-inked pen.
